Fleet 2, Grapevine, Texas

February 12, 2012

We had a meeting of Mutineer owners and loyal friends on Sunday afternoon to accept our Fleet #2 Charter (see attachment) and plan for the upcoming year. Here are some of the things we decided:

To accepted the Fleet #2 Charter, see Charter here.
We elected officers and appointed the Racing Chairman.
We agreed to race on Sundays so as not to conflict with GSC Keel Boat and Catamaran racing on Saturdays, to allow new sails, to limit Spinnakers for 2012. (but to encourage everyone to sail Spinnaker next year).
To fly Ernie and Carol French in for a Mutineer Racing Seminar on Memorial Day weekend. We agreed the racing seminar is open to any boat and crew who will contribute and drag their Mutineer 15 to Grapevine, TX.

It's great to see the enthusiasm in our group and work together to get things moving forward.
Seriously, if anyone wants to join the seminar just let me know by email.

Hi Greg,

The Executive Committee has approved your request to be granted an MCA fleet charter for Fleet #2 at Grapevine, Tx.

Congratulations to you and Chad for forming a sizable fleet within a few months of MNC 2011.  And, no, I did not expect that having MNC 2011 at Grapevine would create sufficient enthusiasm to generate a fleet so quickly.  But, one of the reasons the class moves the nationals around the country and to new venues when possible is to expose sailors and non-sailors to the Mutineer and the people who sail it.  I think both the boat and the Mutt sailors sell themselves (mostly the sailors), but maybe I'm somewhat prejudiced.

Your planned racing series and sailing lessons sounds like a great start for Fleet #2.  Let the EC know if there is anything we can do to help your fleet progress.

We had our first official meeting of Mutineer owners here in Grapevine Texas this past Saturday.  We have identified 10 Mutineer owners who all want to start racing here this spring and help form a new fleet.  I am writing to notify the current MCA board members that we would like to request a fleet designation for Grapevine, Texas.  Please reassign and rename the old Fleet #2 Dallas, Texas to Fleet #2 Grapevine, TX.  As you will see below we already have a significant commitment and we are all ready to get started.

I would say our first meeting was a success.  Seven of our ten Mutineer owners showed up at the lake for an informal gathering and to talk about what we would like to do this year.  Four of the owners showed up with their boats and even though we didn't sail everyone had fun looking at the differences in the boats and how they were rigged.  Several other sailors stopped by to ask questions and are talking about finding a boat of their own.

At least five or six of our owners are first year skippers who will be learning to sail and race their Mutineers this summer.  We are planning a schedule for three Sunday series events, spring, summer and fall.  Four afternoons for spring series, eight for summer and six for fall. If everything is going well we will try to get two races off each day.  Our goal is to have everyone doing well enough by the end of the year that we can ad spinnakers next year.

We are planning to answer questions and help everyone improve after every race.  I have some old learn to sail and race VCR tapes that we are going to convert to digital and that should help too.  Next time we meet we will also start to set up the new fleet rules and try to restrict new sail purchases etc. so we don't have a few owners trying to our money everyone else.

Did you imagine that bringing the Mutineer Nationals to Grapevine would create a new fleet of excited Mutineer sailors?

Here are the names and emails Grapevine sailors who are also MCA members and will act as the founding members of The Grapevine, TX Mutineer Fleet #2.
