MNC 2016 The Pymatuning Challenge
A fantastic week of reacing and fellowship was experienced by those who trecked to Lake Pymatuning, Ohio for MNC 2016. One of the most exciting events was that we met Beetle Bailey of MNC 1980 fame. Beetle won the National Championship way back in 1980. He served as Principle Race Officer for MNC 2016. This is the only time that three National Champions - Beetle Baily, Ernie French, and Gib Charles have all been together. We shared great meals with local fresh vegetables and grilled meats supervised by Grill Sergeant Vince Jones. The weather was superb and the fellowship even better. A great week overall.
A quick breakdown. Jerry threw out his back before the official racing began. His crew, Mike Sigmund, an experienced Buc skipper, stepped in with a pickup crew from PYC on Wednesday and Dan Elliot as crew on Thursday and Friday. Mike and company sailed very well and was 1 point ahead for first place going into the last day of racing. Unfortunately, we were down to only two boats racing on Friday. My CB snapped in two 100' from the finish line during the last race on Thursday. Ernie and Carol also bowed out. So, Friday was match racing between Mike and Gib. Gib won all three races Friday in light winds to take home the championship trophy.
It's unfortunate more MCA members didn't come to PYC. The venue was excellent. The cottages at the PA state campground were only 3 minutes from the yacht club. We had the use of a great clubhouse with kitchen and large outdoor grill. And, the race committee was top notch.
